A Very Brief History of Two-Way Radios
Two way radios were developed in the second world war as a means of communicating with troops on the front line. Since then they have been developed into advanced consumer and business radios capable of doing many more things alongside sending simple voice messages. In 1999 a licence free radio system called PMR446 was introduced, to run alongside licenced PMR radios. This allowed short range communications using low-cost equipment. Shortly after this digital PMR radios were introduced, adding many more features such as clearer interference-free transmissions, GPS positioning, text messaging and much more.
So to put it simply, there are 3 basic radio systems, PMR446 licence free, Analogue 2 way radios and Digital 2 way radios, with the latter two requiring an Ofcom licence.
Which type of Walkie Talkie do I choose?
If you have a tight budget and range and privacy aren't a big concern, then PMR446 radios are the most cost effective choice of radio to talk up to a mile (approximately - some manufacturers exaggerate this range!). If you need more than a mile and/or need your own private frequency then PMR licenced radios will provide a better range and the most robust equipment. Analogue PMR radios are ideal for most people, however if you require the best sound quality, range and/or advanced features such as text messaging or GPS positioning then Digital PMR radios are what you require.
Do I need a licence?
PMR446 radios don't require a licence, and can be used all around Europe. Analogue and Digitial PMR radios will require an Ofcom licence. This can be purchased directly from Ofcom for as little as £75 for 5 years. Alternatively we can take the hassle out of this by applying for the licence on your behalf, we don't charge anything for this service.
